As the 2026 USL Championship regular season enters its final month, the playoff race remains tight with 10 Eastern Conference teams fighting for six remaining spots. Rhode Island FC finds itself in the thick of that race entering Week 31, and will welcome Indy Eleven in a pivotal conference matchup on national television as the Ocean State club continues the hunt for its third-straight postseason berth. RIFC and Indy, who sit eighth and seventh in the table respectively, are separated by just one point in the Eastern Conference standings and hold near-identical records. Both clubs will look to rebound from two-game losing streaks on Wednesday, as the Ocean State club will look to level the score in the reverse fixture after it narrowly fell 1-0 in Indianapolis in the last meeting between the two clubs on May 30. Back on Track
While Indy Eleven still sits three points clear of the playoff line, its mission to extend that gap has taken a major hit over the last two games. The club enters Wednesday’s matchup having suffered back-to-back shutout losses, most recently falling 2-0 to fellow Eastern Conference playoff hopeful Miami FC on Sept. 26. That loss closed the playoff gap between ninth-place Miami and seventh-place Indy to just three points, with Rhode Island FC sitting squarely in the middle of those two teams. Beyond its two-game losing skid, Indy has just one win in its last six games (1W-2L-2T). Its lone win in that stretch was a 4-0 victory vs. Brooklyn FC, and its last win vs. a team in a playoff position was a 2-1 victory over Louisville City FC on Aug. 22. To maintain its place in the top eight, it will need to find form quickly, and a result against an RIFC side closely chasing Indy in the table presents a perfect opportunity to do just that.
Red-Hot Rendón
Indy’s attack primarily runs through Bruno Rendón in 2026. The 26-year-old is enjoying a career season in his second year with the club, leading the squad with 11 goals across all competitions and ranking tied-second on the team with three regular-season assists. Prior to the club’s two-game loss streak, the forward tallied one goal and two assists during Indy’s 4-0 win vs. Brooklyn FC, driving the club’s biggest win of the season and earning a spot on the USL Championship Week 29 Team of the Week. Rendón scored the game-winner in Indy’s 1-0 win over RIFC on May 30, scoring in his third-straight game and completing a streak of four goals in five games that cemented Indy as an early postseason contender. Rendón was a last-minute scratch in the club’s last game vs. Miami FC, and the club will hope that he is back in action for the midweek trip as Indy fights for a crucial result in the Ocean State.
Snap the Streak
Indy took eight total shots in its latest loss vs. Miami, snapping a 12-game streak in which it tallied 10+ shots per game. It has surpassed a double-digit shot total in 20 of its 25 regular-season games this season, putting 123 of its 340 total shots on frame and converting for 32 goals. It ranks sixth in the league in total shots and fifth in shots on target, but sits right in the middle of the pack (tied-14th) in goals, holding the fifth-worst shot conversion rate in the league (9.41 percent). Indy has proven that it can create dangerous attacking chances at a high clip, but will need to improve its conversion to snap its two-game scoreless streak against an RIFC side who have proven difficult to beat at Centreville Bank Stadium.

New Face In Goal
For the first time this season, goalkeeper and captain Koke Vegas will not feature between the sticks for Rhode Island FC. Ahead of Saturday’s game in Charleston, the club’s first-ever signing had previously played every minute of the season in goal across all competitions in 2026. That streak came to an end in the 84th minute, when the shot-stopper was shown a red card for a foul outside of his penalty area. Although unfortunate, the decision paved the way for Jacob Castro to make his Rhode Island FC debut, becoming the third goalkeeper in club history to appear in a competitive fixture for Rhode Island FC. With Vegas suspended for Wednesday’s matchup, the starting job will likely fall to the capable gloves of Castro, who is due to make the first start of his USL Championship career.
Clean Slate
Rhode Island FC will look to get back to winning ways on Wednesday after suffering back-to-back losses, and Centreville Bank Stadium is just the place to rebound. Rhode Island FC turned its home field into a true fortress this season, losing just twice in 17 games at Centreville Bank Stadium across all competitions with a 8W-2L-7T record. The impressive run of form includes a run of nine-straight home games with a loss spanning more than four months from May 2 to Sept. 26. The Ocean State club has conceded multiple goals in just two home games this season, and has only been shut out once. In 17 home games across all competitions, RIFC has out-scored its opponents 31-13, and it is one of just six USL Championship teams this season with two or fewer regular-season home losses.
For the Recordbooks
Rhode Island FC and Indy Eleven, much like their positions in the table, share a near-even record in six previous meetings, with Indy holding a slim 3W-2L-1T advantage in the all-time series. In a series dominated by the host team, and where all six games have been decided by one goal or fewer, the two squads last met on May 30 when Indy delivered RIFC a 1-0 loss in Indianapolis. The return fixture on Wednesday will see the two sides square off for just the second time at Centreville Bank Stadium, where RIFC last defeated Indy on Sept. 13, 2025. That result pushed the Ocean State club over the playoff line, and ended up being a defining result in securing the club’s second-straight playoff berth. Just over one year later, RIFC will welcome Indy Eleven back to Pawtucket for a game of equally-high magnitude, and will hope to repeat history as it looks for another strong finish to the season.
